Blog #9: Pocket Tissue Advertising

Hi, I'm Junsei. I got a cold but it is lucky we do not have the classes on Friday. This time, I will write about the interesting advertising in Japan. I suppose most of you have ever seen the people giving you a portable tissue paper smilingly near the station. We Japanese call this "pocket tissue" but I'm not sure it is correct. I cannot find the word for it so I will use "pocket tissue" to call them.
When I use the station to go to the college, I can get pocket tissue with advertising many times a week. In many cases, I use these pocket tissues without trying to see the advertising on it. But the advertising naturally come in my sight when using tissue. But they are always advertisings about the insurance or bank.
Do you know how much it takes you to advertise with pocket tissues? It's only 4yen per pocket tissue according to the website here. http://www.pt-honpo.com/info/target.html
You need to hire a person to hand them out, it's maybe 8,000yen.(¥1,000/hour) So if you need a thousand of pocket tissues and 1person to hire, it only takes you 12.000yen a day for advertising.
Even if there's other extra charge, it's done with 15.000yen a day.
I've learned the price of an advertising in weekly magazine and found it is extremly expensive.
This pocket tissue advertising makes the viewers very limited, but you can do with so limited money. This Tissue Advertising is really good for the local companies to advertise, for example, a private managed companies such as cram school, supermarket and cake shop. The person who distributes pocket tissues should be able to decide that what kind of people he or she gives the advertising.
I really don't know how effective this advertising is, but now that I learned how much they cost money to advertise and the reason I am given the pocket tissues is to notice the companies on them, I will be careful to receive them with saying "Thank you".

  2. Hello, this is Kyoko. I often get a pocket tissue to the way to the university, but I usually don't look advertising with it. However, I sometimes look it if I'm interesting the store or product. So if there is ittle person who have interest in the goods, pocket tissue advertising can be effective way.

  3. Hi Junsei,
This is Ms. MacGregor. Yes, pocket tissues is the correct term in English, and you are right, it is a form of advertising that is unique to Japan. I agree it costs money to advertise with them, but remember how much cheaper this form of advertising is than running a TV commercial, for example, or printing an ad in a magazine or newspaper. However, I wonder how effective it is.... Many times I rarely look at the company information inside. And I never follow up on what I see anyway, so it is just free tissue for me.
